Troop 152 - Fayetteville, NY OnLine

Adult Leader Training

As has been discussed at Troop committee meetings Hiawatha Seaway Council is part of the pilot scheme for mandatory training for Adult Leaders. The pilot scheme became effective on 01/01/2010 and will be phased in as follows.

2010
All Top Leaders, Scoutmaster, CubMaster etc are required to be trained

2011
All next level direct contact leaders, Assistant Scoutmasters, Den Leaders etc are required to be trained.

No additional schedule for other positions has yet been put in place.

It is required by Troop 152 and our sponsoring entity, Immaculate Conception Parish and the Diocese of Syracuse that anyone who will assist with driving scouts to events, assist with weekend or summer camping, act as a merit badge counselor, or have any other (beyond absolute de minimis) contact with our scouts, must have BSA Youth Protection Training, refreshed every two years.

To help in understanding how the troop operates both at troop meetings as well as at camp, taking the second and third of the basic courses would also be beneficial.

Those courses shown with * are available online at My Scouting See note below.

QUESTION - I have already been trained but I do not recognize these courses do I have to get trained all over again? The short answer is, No - If you took the basic courses when you first became an adult leader, irrespective of what they were called, then all you have to remember is where you put the certificate or an estimate of the date you took them. Note the exceptions to this where regular renewal is required every 2 years.

The table below hopefully gives a clearer picture of what is required;

Note 1 - BSA Youth Protection is still required even if Virtus training is completed.
Note 2 - Required by Assistant Scoutmasters 2011
Note 3 - It is strongly recommended that the primary leader of a tour has these courses
Note 4 - Two leaders require the relevant courses dependant on tour type, hazardous weather for all campouts + Safe swim defense if swimming for example

While this may seem onerous for a volunteer organization, should we not expect the highest levels of training possible to ensure that each youth member enjoys and has a fun and safe time in everything they do and that the program provided gives everything they hoped for and a little more. While training may not be required for all, there is always something more that can be learned that makes our own volunteer time with Boys Scouts just that bit more interesting and enjoyable

Note about Online Training
On line training is available at My Scouting. Before going there to complete your first course make sure you have your BSA ID number, the one on your registration card so that you can complete your online profile. After that is completed, enjoy the courses available - Hazardous Weather anyone!

There is currently an issue with Internet Explorer version 8 which will not allow you to access MyScouting, hopefully this will be updated shortly but if it is anything like even this midget web site, which has not yet finished being rewritten to ensure proper IE8 operation, (W3C Logo on the bottom of a page indicates those that have been) considerable effort and rewriting will be required.
